The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports –Crime in the United States, 2011-Murder rates by age and weapon has been added to the CALiOStatistics/Child Abuse page.
Two new bibliographies to the scholarly literature were added to the Professional Bibliographies series. 1) Child Polyvictimization and Multi-type Maltreatment covers literature relevant to co-occurring and separately occurring multiple and different types of victimizations. 2) Use of Media in Forensic Interviews of Children covers literature relating to use of all types of media during FIs of children. The bibliography is divided into four sections according to media type.

By Scott Modell, PhD and Marcie Davis, MS, has been added to the Resources and Tools for Child Serving Professionals page. The “Sandusky Effect” is evident in the State Legislatures across the country. As of June 4, approximately 105 Bills in 30 States and the District of Columbia had been introduced in the 2012 legislative session on the reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect. Ten of these states have actually enacted legislation. Find out more about the various Bills which have been introduced by going to the Full-Text Open-Access Section of CALiO and looking in the “Reporting” Section. Here you can link to the web page on the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) web site. There is also a link to a powerpoint produced by NCSL on Mandatory Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect which covers both state and federal statutes. The Research Librarians at the NCAC recently conducted a Search of the Literature and Survey of Child Maltreatment Professionals to attempt to answer the question, is neglect being neglected in the 21st Century? The results of the literature search and survey of child maltreatment professionals will be presented at the International Family Violence and Child Victimization Research Conference, Family Research Laboratory & Crimes against Children Research Center, University of New Hampshire, July 8-10. Findings can be found on CALiO’s Research to Practice page with the title The Neglect of Neglect: Is Research Informing Practice?
The National Plan to Prevent the Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (2012) was deveoped by the National Coalition to Prevent the Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children to provide practical steps that indivicuals, organizations, businesses and policymakers can implement to promote positive youth development and prevent child sexual abuse and exploitation. The April issue of the Juvenile Justice Bulletin presents results from the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), regarding victimizations that the police; teachers and other school personnel; and doctors and other medical personnel were aware of. “Child and Youth Victimization Known to Police, School, and Medical Authorities” first describes how much these authorities know about child victimization. Then the authors, David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod, Heather Turner, and Sherry Hamby, discuss what the implications of the study findings are for increasing disclosure of child victimizations and for effective prevention and treatment of child maltreatment. The first is Secondary Trauma, Compassion Fatigue and Burnout among Professionals who Work with Maltreated Children and the second is Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse .These Professional Bibliographies can found in the Resources section of CALiO under Evidence-Practice, along with 21 other Professional Bibliographies relevant to Child Maltreatment.
The lasting adverse effects of child maltreatment on adult health issues are clear. Adults who were abused or neglected as children are at a greater risk for a variety of adverse physical and mental health conditions when compared with adults who were not maltreated as children. Preventing child abuse and neglect not only protects children, it creates healthier adults. The NCAC’s fact sheet series, “As a Matter of Fact,” discuss key research findings on the importance of child abuse prevention. These fact sheets are intended to promote the use of research to guide child abuse prevention practices. Recently added to the Professional Bibliography section on CALiO, is the Child Maltreatment in Native American and Alaska Native Communities Bibliography. Compiled by Muriel Wells, this bibliography has citations and abstracts from journal articles, research and policy reports, chapters from books, and guidelines relevant to the topic of child maltreatment in these communities.
Recently added to the Full-Text Open-Access Publications (formerly known as EPubs) section of CALiO, The U. S. Department of State 2011 Trafficking in Persons Report includes 184 country narratives that assess how governments from around the globe have enacted legislation and implemented their efforts to combat trafficking in persons. The UN Trafficking Protocol seeks to guarantee prevention, prosecution, and protection for the maximum number of victims. The United States defines trafficking in persons to include all of the conduct involved in forced labor as well as the trafficking of adults and children for commercial sexual exploitation. This report is available in HTML and PDF, and due to its large size, the PDF has been separated into sections for easier download. In addition to the country narratives, there are sections on government responsibility, prevention, prosecution, protection and partnership. The introductory material is available in Arabic, Chinese, French, Persian, Russian and Spanish.

The most comprehensive reference list of the publications of Michael E. Lamb, Ph.D. whose scholarship has significantly advanced developmental psychology, and had a major impact on legal authorities, forensic investigators, policymakers, and others concerned with the well-being of children has been compiled and added to the Professional Bibliographies section of CALiO. It is bibliography no. 26.

The Open Access Research Databases secion of CALiO has two new entries.
CrimeSolutions.gov uses rigorous research to inform practitioners and policy makers about what worksin criminal justice, juvenile justice, and crime victim services. Programs are rated based on evidence indicating goal achievement.
The FBI Uniform Crime Reports Database with Table Building Tool provides national and state level crime statistics beginning 1960 and local level statistics beginning 1985. Parameters for table building are easily set.
A new bibliography, Nonoffending Caregivers of Abused Children, has been added to the bibliography section.
Case by Case: news coverage of child sexual abuse, 2007-2009 has been added to the Full Text Open Access Publications section under the heading, Advocacy.
An Outline of the National Children’s Advocacy Center Forensic Interview Structure has been added to the library’s collection. This outline may be accessed by going to the CALiO Best Practices and Guidelines section and then going to the Interviewing topic.
The Annotated Bibliography of the Evidence-Based Literature Supporting the Ten Standards for Accreditation by the National Children’s Alliance can be accessed in CALiOTM. It can be found under CALiO Library > Resources > Practitioners Reference and Resource Center.
Following NCAC Executive Director, Chris Newlin’s essay on Declining Rates of child sexual abuse,(December, 2010, there has been increased interest in research on this topic. In response, a new bibliography titled Declining Rates of Child Sexual Abuse is located in the Professional Bibliographies series as bibliography no. 16.
THOMAS Legislative Search has been added to the Open Access Research Databases collection. THOMAS allows searching of Congressional bills and resolutions, the Congressional Record, daily congressional activity, public laws by number, Roll Call votes and much more.
New this month is the National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse State Statutes. State statutes relevant to child abuse are divided into 45 categories.
